Hitchcock uses The Birds to build suspense by making sure to take his time. Hitchcock establishes Brenner and Daniels' relationship long before anything happens. A strange real-life attack by smokey shearwaters in Capitola, Calif., in the year 1961, thought to have occurred because of diatom poisoning in the digest of anchovies by the birds causing extreme aggression, was studied by Hitchcock in preparation for the film.
